Thinkin' about a computer upgrade
Day 177: Candles in the Cigar Inn a photo by allankcrain on Flickr.I want something in a much smaller case, and then to have an external raid enclosure for bulk storage.
So, need:
1. Small case. Desktop form factor, but minimalist expansion options. Needs a 5.25" external bay for a DVD, and an external 3.5" for my card reader would be nice.
2. Motherboard with some sort of multi-core CPU. Just about anything on the market will probably be faster than what I've got now.
3. Some amount of RAM. It's apparently gotten really cheap while I haven't been paying attention, so I should be able to go a nice distance up from my current 1GB.
4. USB2 and Ethernet on board. PS/2 keyboard port would be nice but non-essential.
5. Dual monitor output. This should also ideally be on-board. Doesn't need to be particularly fast video since I don't do a lot of gaming.
6. FireWire would be nice, but non-essential.
7. An open expansion slot would be nice, but non-essential.
Then I'd want a three- or four-bay external enclosure. Two 1TB drives for my pictures (primary and backup), one 1TB drive for backing up the internal drive.
