November (16):
Blutzoll (Blood price) (Tanja Huff): Another book I missed the first time around, and so far I'm not sure if I missed anything. Still reading this.
Dark Ages: Assamite - Dark Ages Clan Novels 2 (Stefan Petrucha): A good story, but it doesn't hold up to the promise of the first novel.
Dark Ages: Cappadocian - Dark Ages CLan Novels 3 (Andrew Bates):So far, the weakest of the Dark Ages CLan Novels. Almost bad enough to make me want to give up reading the whole series. Reading this right now.
Dark Ages: Nosferatu - Dark Ages Clan Novels 1 (Gherbod Fleming): Yes, a lot of Vampire this month, and I suspect december will be more of the same. This was really good, a lot of well written characterization with a beleivable character. Pity the series so far hasn't held up to this promise.
Dark Tyrants (ed. Justin Achilli & Robert Hatch): A collection of short fiction for White Wolf's Vampire: the Dark Ages game. You can tell this was published during the beginning of the game's life cycle as it contradicts some of what was later established as the "canon" of the game. Still good reading though
Du bist tot (Halting State) (Charles Stross): Written from the point of view of three characters but in second person singular, this is a gripping crime story where the crime is theft... in the world of an online RPG. However, this theft quickly has repercussions in the real world.
Durch bittere Asche - Der Gralskonvent 1 (To Sift Through Bitter Ashes) (David Niall Wilson): The original V:tDA trilogy. Ironically enough, I didn't read it when it was first released, and now I feel like a fool for that. Well writen and quickly read.
The Elements of Style (William Strunk & E.B. White): This slim little book finds mention and recommendation in every writing guide I've read so far, and I can only agree - if you plan on writing, read this book. It's that good.
Embers of Atlantis (Tracy Hickman): Quite a few years ago there was an RPG called Fireborn which let you play reincarnated dragons who were being reborn in modern day London. However, it got canceled when the publisher decided to refocus on boardgames. Now it's back, at least as a series of novels that advance the timeline quite a bit. Quick, good to read action, if a bit short.
How not to write a novel (Sandra Newman & Howard Mittelmark): A brilliant help book for new authors on how NOT to do it. Even if you never plan on writing a novel, you should have great fun with this one.
In toten Sprachen - Der gralskonvent 2 (To Speak in Lifeless Tongues) (David Niall Wilson): The second part of the trilogy. Not quite as good as the first book, but shorter.
Die Kinder des Saturn (Saturn's Children) (Charles Stross): Hey, look, a novel without Vampires! Imagine a world in which mankind has died out and left the world to robots - but without really giving the robots the control they need to take over. And then write a spy novel about a sex robot built long after the death of the last human.
Midnight Blue - The Sonja Blue COllection (Nancy A. Collins): The original punk vampire, and a novel where the vampires - even the protagonists - are real monsters, no pretty sexy vampires here.
Prestige - Die Meister der Magie (The Prestige) (Christopher Priest): You've probably seen the film version of this tale, and it is a very good film, but let me tell you, if you havn't read the novel, you're missing out some very good material, including the modern day plotline that turns this into a nice little horror story.
Schmitz' Katze (Ralf Schmitz): A german commedian talking about his cat and cats in general. Funny, and a recommended read if you ever have plans on buying a cat.
Von verlorenen Träumen - Der Gralskonvent 3 (To dream of dreamers lost) (David Niall Wilson): Still not as good as the first book of the trilogy, but better than the second part. Still reading this.
