God, I’m Bored
A perusal of IMDb’s Most Popular Feature Films Released 1960 to 1969 and 100 Greatest Films of 1960s shows that many of the top movies from that decade were adaptations (or re-adaptations) of books and/or Broadway musicals. There were also sequels, like the James Bond films Goldfinger and You Only Live Twice (the first Bond film was Dr. No) or The Pink Panther (the first Inspector Clouseau film was A Shot in the Dark). Elizabeth Taylor starred in Cleopatra in 1963; according to Wikipedia that was the fifth version of Cleopatra filmed (the first was in 1899!) They were also making movies based on the Bible for decades before the 1960s, so you could call movies like King of Kings (1963) either remakes or reboots. The same goes for Shakespeare adaptations; Romeo and Juliet (1968) was at least the third movie made with that title (the first was in 1936). And that’s just me scanning the lists and looking for titles that I recognize. There are probably plenty of others that are remakes, adaptations, or sequels but I just haven’t heard of them.
