I climbed up
on his back for a while
I surveyed the line
of his neck
finding that the space
between muscle and clavicle
did not fit my agenda

I've memorized the shadows
that conceal buckled pavement
on my route
now I merely lift my knees higher
and spare Mallory's face
subtle shifts to dismay
at my bloodied knees and hands
but who does not value blood attained
in clumsy sprawling in pouring rain

masochists that we are
pulling gravel from your palm two days later.
