For Morgause

Courfeyrac has an errand. It is not one he's particularly happy with, but there is, it transpires, surprisingly little that he will not do for love.

So he's gotten dressed properly for the first time in several weeks, and gone to knock on Queen Morgause's door.

He takes a deep breath. "A friend of a friend, madame. May I come in?"

A pause. "Very well."

So he lets himself in, not without misgiving, and manages a creditable bow.

Morgause is sitting by the little fireplace at the end of the room, her dark hair loosely braided. She watches him steadily. "Well, sir?"

As if he weren't there, she unfolds it and reads it over. It's short; after a moment she folds it again, her mouth quirking, and looks up at him again. "My thanks."

"Madame," stiffly. "May I take him your reply?"

Oh, right, like he doesn't know that look. On the one hand, it's hard not to like a woman with a sense of humor. On the other... "I'll be happy to wait," he says as blandly as he can.

Morgause only smiles at him, amused. "How does he?"

"Indifferently, madame."

She bites her lip, glancing down. "I am sorry for it."

"He'd be better for company," Courfeyrac says dryly.
