It wasn't the first time and probably wouldn't be the last that Penny had witnessed something showing up that shouldn't have been there. Rumor had it that it happened to everyone, after all. Still, there was no way she ever could have prepared for it happening again, and all things considered, nothing she could think of would have been worse than what had appeared this time.

She'd gotten back to the hut with Gideon still out doing something or other, and had only intended to just change and hang out until he got back, figuring she wouldn't be waiting too long. The island, apparently, had other plans. There sitting on the table was a sight that stopped her in her tracks, even if it wasn't something she'd actually seen before. The meaning in it was clear enough, and unduly cruel, with her wedding just barely a week away. She should have known this was fucking stupid. She never had been and never would be better than this, and no matter how hard she tried, her past wasn't anything she could get away from. As she'd told Gideon countless times before, she wasn't good enough for him, and this was just a reminder of that, as if it were the island's way of telling her just how much she didn't deserve as great a guy as him.

Already feeling her eyes well up, she turned away, leaning against the table so she didn't have to look at what was sitting there anymore -- a fifty dollar bill and a case of Heineken, two things that seemed so innocent but that really, really weren't. Under any other circumstances, a six pack of beer would have been welcome. Now, though, it meant something completely different. She'd been doing so well, so fucking well, and now, just days away from having what she wanted more than anything, she was brought right back to thoughts of who she'd been before, who she probably still was, underneath it all. She didn't have the first idea of what to do next, let alone what she would do when Gideon got back. All she did know was that she really, really did not fucking want to deal with this.
