In mid-March, my mom found a cat caught in a trap. My neighbor raises and hunts Chinese pheasants in his vast, forested backyard, and to ensure that he is the only creature hunting them, he covers his property with cat traps. These traps are like miniature bear traps: they're a pair of iron jaws designed to very painfully clamp down onto whatever steps between them, break the leg and not let go. They're usually chained to the ground, so that my neighbor can make rounds occasionally, kill whatever he finds in them, and reset them. He's not a particularly likable person.
So my mom found a cat who'd been caught in one of these traps, but who'd managed to pull the chain free. By the looks of things, she'd been wandering with a trap and a chain on her leg for at least three days. She was starving. When my mom found her, she'd gotten the chain she was dragging caught in something and she was trying hard to gnaw her leg off to escape. My mom got her out of the trap and took her back to the garage, where she got food and water and blankets. The cat's leg was completely destroyed: shreds of it were hanging off and bone was exposed. It would have to be amputated. Mom had no intentions of keeping the cat, but she took care of it really well with painkillers and antibiotics, hoping that whoever took it in for good would pay for the amputation.
Because being an amputee makes any creature into a pirate, I named the cat Captain Long Cat Silver for the duration of it's stay in my mom's garage. She was the most chill cat I've ever seen. She never bit or scratched or even struggled. She would just hang out in your lap and purr. She was a real sweetheart.
After a few weeks, no one had expressed any interest in Silvers, and both Mom and I were starting to get pretty attached to her. So we worked out a deal. We'd get the operation done ourselves and then Mom would take care of her for a year and change, until I got back from Japan. Then I would take her and Silvers would be my cat.
The operation happened yesterday. Silvers didn't make it. She was doing really well through nearly the whole procedure, but her heart gave out as they were finishing things up. The vet was really surprised; Silvers went into the operating room surprisingly healthy, all things considered.
So passes my three legged pirate cat, Captain Long Cat Silver.
Peace.
