So tonight's Ukrainian National Federation meeting got interesting specifically because of a proposed amendment to the UNF's national constitution to the tune of adding an allegiance to "Christian principles", which got a unanimous disapproval from everyone save two members of our local branch. I got specifically asked by one of these two opposing members if I would quit the UNF if this amendment got voted in, and I told her I would have to seriously think about it if this did come to pass, because yes, I would stick to my own principles, as well as the original founding principles of the UNF which were specifically secular based because the UNF was founded at a time in Canada when there were literally street brawls between the recent Ukrainian immigrant followers of some of the different sects of Christianity at the time and the founders intended the UNF to be, from the start, inclusive of all Ukrainian-Canadians. (Holy run on sentence, Batman!) Never mind that these "Christian principles" weren't even specifically defined, so how could I possibly agree to follow something that I'm not even sure what it is? This was one of the spearheads of opposition to the idea, the other main one being that the UNF's worked so "well" (relatively speaking) over the years with what's already in the constitution so why should any of it change?
Normally, being challenged so directly like this would send me packing, but I didn't back down this time because...I'm not entirely sure why. I also ended up tossing in my two cents on the subject and basically said that I didn't care if you were Christian or whatever on your own time but why ruin a good thing by making it divisive when it wasn't even that in the first place? I love this lady to death, don't get me wrong - she's super nice and friendly and she's the one who's gotten me volunteering at Fiesta the past couple of years (and hopefully this year too!) but AUGH.
