So first my parents started attending "for the atmosphere", and now they go to church events (there was just an archbishop and a few bishops visiting and they had a dinner/service, if I am remembering correctly), and my dad's helping the "parish council" (or whatever it's called) with their constitution and/or accounting (apparently). Oh, and my parents get invitations in the mail for church events, and the official Ukrainian-Greek-Orthodox newspaper comes in the mail. And we've had the house "blessed" twice since we moved in. My parents still claim to be non-religious, and that very well may be true, and of course it's their lives (and their choice). And all this from going "for the atmosphere". That's not even mentioning the Ukrainian-Canadian committee that the priest and my father are both on, which I'm glad I'm not a member of because I've seen a program for it that includes prayer (because it's probably traditional, or something.)
I am less and less impressed by this, because it seems like they are being slowly (and subtly) drawn "into the fold" and increasingly getting involved with things that...well, I'll say it. Not very PC of me, but...it feels like they're being drawn into a cult and there's nothing I can do about it. A very large and publicly accepted cult that's termed a religion because it's "respectable". I've already spoken my opinion of this to them and they've steadfastly stuck to their path, so that's the end of it, at least practically speaking. I'm still rather uncomfortable with all of this though, and I wish there was something I could do do change it. I guess I'll just have to get used to the influx of superstition into my family life though.
MEH.
