Can't Have the Mango Usagi and Mamoru watched as Minako and Kai made their way up the short driveway. The couple had not come to their house together - and Minako would be thoroughly annoyed if accused of otherwise- but had somehow arrived at the same time. Mamoru glanced down to his wristwatch and wondered if the time he saw was off. Kai was always promptly on time and Minako was always promptly late. So should he really be surprised that they would both arrive early knowing that the other one would be there?
The duo entered the doorway and slipped off their shoes in exchange for a pair of guest slippers. Minako uttered a passing greeting of hello to Mamoru before looping her arm through Usagi’s. With a quick spin of her heel, her hair fanned out behind her and the two girls walked into the living room already engaged in a conversation. Mamoru offered a wry smile at the obvious dismissal by the visiting blonde, and gestured for Kai to follow after the two girls. After all, it was his fault that the Shitennou still lingered around.
Minako didn’t know how she and Kai ended up sitting together on the small loveseat when Usagi and Mamoru obviously would have been more comfortable there rather than in their separate plush chairs. Why did it seem like everyone was in a conspiracy against her? Everyone seemed to be convinced that she and Kai liked each other despite the fact that both had shrugged off those comments. So what if they occasionally passed what could be considered as sexually charged comments between them. Was it really so unbelievable that she would somehow find herself uninterested in the man besides her that even she had to admit was a prime specimen of said species? ‘Get a room,’ she snorted to herself, remembering Mamoru’s words from a few days ago. She’d send him to a room alright….full of white sheets and medical staff….
The quiet sound of ringing bells invaded the room as Mamoru’s cell phone began to chime, disrupting the light - and somewhat friendly - conversation that had been going on. Although this may have been in part because Minako was too lost in her thoughts to be interested in the words of the man next to her. Mamoru apologized as he pulled it from his pocket, his nose wrinkling at the name showing on the phone’s display. Without further thought he clicked a button to silence the call and moved to put the phone back into his pocket only to be halted by the repeat ringing sound and sighed as he politely excused himself to take the call.
Kai nodded his head in response and turned to Usagi to ask for a pen. Usagi gestured to the end table on Minako’s right where two pink pens and a Hello Kitty pencil where placed haphazardly in an old coffee mug with a few other random items. With a smile and thank you nod, Kai reached around Minako with his arm, the skin of his forearm lightly brushing her shoulder as he plucked one of the pens from the mug. Minako blushed lightly from the contact, the skin of her neck still tingling from the feeling of his warm breath as he leaned close to her. Her hands clenched tightly against the hem of her short skirt as she mentally scolded him for doing that on purpose.
She was determined to let his actions go without further instance knowing that he had done that to get a rise out of her if nothing else. Although it seemed that he had other intentions in mind. He had been writing something or another down on a piece of personalized paper with small pink bunnies hopping across the top when Usagi excused herself to check on Mamoru as he still hadn’t returned from the phone call that he had excused himself to take. Minako leaned forward just slightly to see exactly what he had been writing - as she had been too busy being flustered to pay attention to the conversation around her.
“What are you writing?” she asked him disinterestedly. “A list of other inappropriate things you can do while we’re in public together.
“Inappropriate,” he mused. “Usagi didn’t seem to mind.”
“Usagi isn’t the one that you were so nonchalantly touching a moment ago.”
Kai smiled lightly without looking up to meet her gaze. “I’m sure that I can think of many other things that would dance along the line of inappropriateness.”
She let out a mild ‘hurumph’ sound and started to look away when she felt Kai’s arms wrap tightly around her. His hand gently grasped her chin to bring her back to face him, and in one swift move, he dipped her backwards and pressed his lips firmly against hers, slipping his tongue into her surprised mouth. She didn’t know if she kissed him back, but found that his kiss wasn’t completely unpleasant. As quickly as it happened, he brought her back upright and unwound his arms to resume his writing on the bunny stamped paper. Minako sat bolt upright, suddenly nervous that maybe she hadn’t kissed him back or that he had thought her to be a bad kisser.
Usagi briskly re-entered the room and plopped down into the chair she previously occupied like a young girl rather than the queen she would become. She started speaking quickly about the phone call from the hospital that Mamoru was nearly done with before she noticed Minako’s rigid posture.
“Minako?” she asked, concern evident in her voice. “Are you ok?”
Minako nodded dumbly and mumbled something about needing a strong drink with olives. Kai looked up at Usagi and his lips pulled into that gently curved line that Minako recognized to be his most seductive smile - even she had difficulty resisting that look. “I could use a drink of water as well if you don’t mind,” he said to the pigtailed blonde in his smooth voice. Usagi happily nodded and bounded from her seat to head towards the small kitchen around the corner and out of sight.
Kai’s smile grew as his hand continued to move swiftly over the paper below it. “Funny, that used to be my reaction.”
