Summary: Serenity and the Lady of Shalott are very similar in that they fall in love with an image that end the end they both die for.
The Lady of Shalott must weave her magical web without ever looking at the world. Instead she views the world through a mirror. One day she sees Sir Lancelott and decides to leave her tower. She writes her name on a boat and sails down the river to Camelot where her body is found.
She sits high up in the sky, surrounded by the white marble walls of her palace, untouchable to the world. One day she will inherit everything, and for that she must be protected. Day by day she walks the same corridors of her palatial prison never allowed to see the world around her. Her mother introduces her to pictures of the beautiful blue and green orb, and she watches it through a monitor. At first she enjoys this new freedom, but soon finds that she feels even more so trapped. This orb is untouchable, much like her own image in the mirror.
She begins to grow saddened by this realization until his image appears in the monitor. Instantly she falls in love with the piercing blue eyes of the dark haired man and knows that she must find him. So she escapes from her white marble containment and sends herself to earth to meet this man.
Their eyes meet, and instantly their destiny unfolds.
She cradles his fallen body against her bosom, her gown of white silk quickly stained red by the fluid escaping the wound on his chest. Rather than face the prospect of once again knowing a world without him and his beautiful image, she pulls the sword from his chest and plunges it into her own. With death she hoped to find her freedom and his love, for without either there was no life for her.
