"husband" -- what a difference a word makes.

In the obituaries of former U.S. Rep. Gerry Studds, the New York Times and the Boston Globe refer to Dean Hara as his husband. The Washington Post mentions that they got married in 2004 but only says that Mr. Hara had been his partner since 1991.

Yes, they'd been together for 15 years, that's certainly significant, but Mr. Hara was Mr. Studds' husband. That wasn't so hard to say, was it?

(Yeah, yeah, I know, it's more proper to say "Rep. Studds" than "Mr. Studds", but it would have diluted the point I was making.)
