Neither one of them copes particularly well with being denied the love of their life, particularly since they both come from a culture where men don't really talk about their feelings (Ennis (Heath Ledger) much more so than Jack (Jake Gyllenhaal), who at least has fantasies of a life they could build together.)
Nobody wins here - not the men, not their wives, not their families. I cried through most of the end of the movie.
In an amazing bit of irony, the closing credits revealed that the movie was filmed in Alberta - the only Canadian province whose government has gone on record to state that it will try to get the Canadian policies permitting same-sex marriage overturned.
