So I went ahead and watched the pilot.
I stick with my initial assessment: I wish this was a three-hour movie. It's very well-made, but the aesthetic isn't the sort to allow me get super-invested in it. I'm not really sure why; it's will-to-powery in its way, and postmodern in that the whole show is a Biblefic AU. But for all that, it still manages to not be very id-vortexy.
Not to mention failing the Bechdel test on all but the most superficial level. (Queen Borg Queen and her assistant talking about a lost cell phone technically passes the text, I guess.)
In many ways it reminds me of the pilot episode of Heroes, which convinced me that that show wasn't for me either.
It takes a long time to tell the story. Somehow, it manages to do this and still not give us very many good character moments.
Queen Borg Queen is pretty awesome, as promised by the flist, but pretty much solely through the awesomeness of Susanna Thompson; the writing doesn't give her anything at all to work with, really.
I don't really have a grasp on Princess Healthcare, which is problematic because she's the character I'd be invested in if I were to watch this show on a regular basis. For the time being, I'm assuming she's more or less a much (and I mean much) dumber version of Valentine Wiggin. Of course, this might be influenced by my already stated desire to write 'cest fic between her and her gay brother.
Jack I don't care about at all except to 'ship him with his sister but I definitely have enough on him to make a 'cest plot work.
The emo manpain of everyone else I really, really don't care about. Except the brother-in-law sort of looks like William H. Macy, which I guess is cool.
