The immaculate conception/virgin bith confusion is regrettable, but one of those things which most people, even some believers, are really vague about. Talking to 'non-Mariolatrous' Protestant friends has kept me aware of that. Similarly, people probably ought to know that penguins don't mate for life, but they are constantly told eg in Happy Feet and various documentaries that they do, so why wouldn't they think so?

No, for two reasons. A lot of people there are going to be entirely traumatised by the death of their friend 'in a traffic accident''on his way to the wedding' which is presumably how the death of the guy who got eaten will be spun. Also, if you woke up next morning, aware of having been so drunk that you forgot the entire wedding, would you admit it? Especially if everyone was being polite enough not to mention it...
