Torchwood 1x01, 1x02, 1x03

"We didn't miss," from 1x02. Most important line of dialogue we've had in the entire series so far.

This is the mission statement of Torchwood, if not Torchwood. They don't miss. They're the best (they say), and as a result they can do whatever they want. Laws don't apply them. Morality doesn't apply them. Common sense safety precautions don't apply to them. These are things for lesser, non-Torchwood mortals. They're beyond such things. Beyond good and evil?

They get to decide our fates for us, because they know better than we do.

It's an adolescent's misreading of Nietzsche. Very will-to-powery. Insanely will-to-powery. Which makes good television. Close to the id vortex.

And of course the text supports their claims. They don't miss; the authors won't let them. They always save the day. Save the world. A lot.

But power corrupts. Already we've had Suzie corrupted by it in 1x01, and Owen on the brink in 1x03 (not to mention his much-discussed actions in 1x01). That's twice in three episodes, too much to be a coincidence.

Not to mention the example of Torchwood One.

This is a show about power, abuse of. About people who don't miss and what happens when people who don't miss do miss. I like, very much.

torchwood, textual analysis, will-to-poweriness
