Kyle and I have Verizon DSL and it's great. Phone + internet for $50 a month (you have to buy a phone line to get DSL). Our wireless router is f-ed up, though, and neither of our two laptops can connect for any period of time, so we've taken to plugging in directly until we can get a new router.

Kyle does some heavy-duty uploading and downloading, too, and he's never had a problem as long as he was plugged in directly (wireless is a different story). I think the actual difference between the speeds when you compare cable to DSL is very, very small -- I've never had a problem doing normal internet-y things like youtube, iTunes, etc.

Oh -- maybe try to download a new driver for your router? They sometimes update them and forget to tell you.

I blame the wireless router, basically. Also, I hate Time Warner, so why not blame them, too. We had TWC for a while but our connection sucked and there's a whole complicated story to go along with why we switched to DSL, including multiple home visits and HD channels not showing up, but suffice to say we're satisfied DSL customers.
