I read this book because Chris Colfer wrote it, having already seen the film he wrote and starred in, expecting to like it. The film he wrote is a totally different animal, and something I loved because he and I are both from the same part of California, and the film captures that area very well. (I actually met him when he was still in high school.) The book... I basically came to the same conclusions you did about it. I was curious about it because I knew it was something he started writing when he was the age the characters were and was intrigued by the idea of twins as an extension of his personality (the characters are twins because he's a Gemini), but I found the book mostly... disappointing.
I sniffed around before I wrote the review (so if I came across information about the books I could put this one in better context) and I saw that he's kinda renaissance about his interests so I was more inclined to believe it's not that he's a celebrity getting his stamp on something, he's genuinely interested and talented in this project, I just wish... you know. :^\
Someone pointed out that if it was a "committee-written" book using his name, it would have been more lucrative if it was a teen gay romance, so that theory was unlikely.
