Man, that synopsis sounds so manga-ish. I'm surprised you picked it up! And you'd be surprised how quickly you breeze through a single manga. I'll have to check this one out; I read another weird-man-adopting-weird-child manga called Yotsuba!, though that one sounds more inane compared to this one.
I adore the manga that take the time to faithfully translate and subtly teach readers aspects of a culture. It helps you appreciate manga as a international bridge rather than just treating it as foreign and therefore cool by default.
Hey, I gotta keep up with manga-- my girlfriend loves it and thus it's a way to share things with her and whatnot!
This series was actually excellent (I read the second and third collections, as you probably guessed by reading my book write-up and all) right up until-- well, I didn't bother reading that part (I'm sorry if I'm a spoily-spoiler, but if it helps, I read the Wiki entry on this going in and it didn't lessen my like of the books).

THIS THIS THIS. This was a wonderful escape into Japan rather than just something Japanese-flavored (probably helped by the fact it was actually created by a Japanese author and artist).
