Excellent, I can't wait to read this book now ^_^ I do not remember from the original book, but when Leo is speaking about fifteen years ago, does he mention that he himself is speaking in the year 2000 or are you just assuming the publication date is his present? Couldn't he just be speaking from 2015 or around now? The only time I've really ever paid attention to a timeline that way was in the Harry Potter series, mostly because the Lexicon helped put together the massive timeline from the one or two dates or year references JKR did drop. If you're a stickler though, she has Dudley buying a Playstation several years before they were available in the US or UK ^_^
Tangentially, have you read any of Louis Sachar's books? The Sideways Stories From Wayside School books are aimed at much younger readers but are still charming and quirky. There's A Boy In The Girl's Bathrrom made me laugh and cry several times over and reminds me very much of Spinelli's writing. Holes I never read, and somehow felt less interest in it after it

These books are like sunshine-- I was in a good mood for hours after I finished Love, Stargirl. ^^
I was going to mention that Spinelli never has Leo naming 2000 as his present so therefore it could be set in the future, but I was burned on the future genre recently and I was just as glad that even the brilliant Spinelli didn't go there. I remember taking the "Nerd, Geek, or Dork?" quiz (it's actually a lot of fun) and snickering at the question "I loudly and regularly complain about historical inaccuracies in books, films, and television shows (check as false, somewhat false, very false, true, somewhat true, very true
