THIS IS THE END OF THIS STORY!Hey, guys! I just posted yesterday, I know. But I mightn't find the time to post it next week. So I decided to post this now. Like I said up there, this is the last part of this story. The ending is unlike what I imagined so some parts might still be mysterious and weird; I apologise for that. I kinda like the ending, though.

P.S: the song totally inspired me

Well, enjoy!

~XI~

The hill that looks down to the plateau is located so strategically one can actually see down on everything that is going on in the plateau. The perfect spot to witness the battle between the boy with two heart beats and a girl with no hearts at all. The bruised woman is finally there. Her breath is short and her whole body is completely bruised now. She keeps panting and sweats keep rolling down her cheeks. She reaches the edge of the hill when she is almost ready to collapse. She looks down on the boy and the girl then sighs in relief when she finds out that they are both still alive. No murder here, she whispers to herself.

‘It won’t be long now,’ a voice suddenly says.

The bruised woman turns to find her colleagues in the same spot as she is now. The shorter woman is smirking with full confidence. The bruised woman grits her teeth at the sight.

‘It’s not going to happen,’ she says, looking at her in rage.

‘Oh, that’s what you think, dear.’

‘That’s what I know.’

The shorter woman simply rolls her eyes.

Below the hill, the boy and the girl are once again in combat. They both do it in silence. Every move is so swift. Every moment counts. The girl rises to the air, ready to strike downward, just as the boy leaps from the ground as well. They clash in the air, like boomerangs getting caught in each other. Then they kick each other off and go flying into the ground, both landing on their feet.

For a moment, they just stare at each other.

The boy is panting while smirking. ‘You don’t give up easily, do you?’

The girl shrugs. ‘I hear people say that all the time.’

The boy chuckles.

‘So why don’t you just give up instead?’

With that last sentence, the girl strikes forward. The boy quickly evades the attack. The girl strikes with her legs but the boy catches it with his hand. She turns in circle and strikes with her left arm. The boy catches that too.

The girl looks up it him in irritation. ‘You’re good.’

‘Planning to give up now?’ the boy smirks.

The girl, who is supposed to look defeated, instead, smiles. ‘Not just yet.’

She stretches her right arm right into the boy’s chest. The boy looks down to his chest in disbelief, his eyes open wide. The bruised woman witnesses the incident in horror, silently screaming. The shorter woman smiles in delight, almost clapping.

‘No,’ the bruised woman whispers.

‘Yes!’ the shorter woman shouts.

The boy looks down to his chest then up at the girl. His face is completely blank. ‘What did you-‘

The girl doesn’t answer. Slowly, she pulls her hand out of his chest.

As the girl does so, a blinding light comes out of the boy’s chest. Everybody closes their eyes at the sight of the blinding light. The light becomes brighter and brighter until it seems to flood the whole world. But then it turns warm, as if trying to tell everyone that it’s safe to open their eyes now.

The boy opens his eyes carefully. He sees the silhouette of the girl, standing right in front of him. There is a light behind her, so blinding yet so soft. The boy squints as he sees it, and he wants to make sure that it is real: his friend is smiling warmly at him. How long has it been? How long has it been since the last time he saw her smiling, laughing with him with warmth he hasn’t recognized in a long time? Without him noticing, tears start rolling down his very cheeks.

The girl smiles warmly and all of a sudden the boy knows that she is going away.

‘No, wait, don’t go,’ he says, reaching out to her.

The girl turns to him, her face all puzzled. ‘But I must,’ she says.

The boy opens his mouth but no words come out. He knows she must. He knows there is absolutely nothing he can do to prevent her from going. Because, whether he or the girl likes it or not, she will still go. He simply drops to his knees in hopelessness. He clench his fists, gripping at the soil as if it was the earth’s fault that she died, that she has to go, that they have to be separated now.

A shadow towers over him. The girl floats there, almost on top of him.

‘Look, I know this might not be the right time but there is something I want to say,

‘I have loved you and I have hated you. I have cared for you and I have ignored you. You have been more than a good friend to me, you have been my salvation. You have annoyed me and irritated me more than you can imagine. You have hurt me and you have healed me. You have been there for me. You have been there with me. You have told me things nobody else has said of me. You have told me things people keep telling me. You have accepted me and you have rejected me. You have forgotten about me. You have remembered me.’

The girl smiles.

‘I never guessed, when I first saw you, that we’d be in better and worse terms than I have imagined possible. I never thought you and I would be friends and enemies on so many levels. You have taught me love. You have taught me hatred. You have saved me and you have betrayed me. You have made me feel better. You have made me feel worse.

‘I love it when we talk as if nobody else can understand. I love it when sometimes people see the connection between us like static electricity when I can’t even see it. I love it when you listen to me nag about things. I love it when you tell me things you don’t tell anyone else.

‘Little by little, though, you change. As you do, my feelings for you change as well. Little by little I learned not to hope for you. Little by little I learned to try to ignore you. Little by little everything seems to change.

‘But it’s alright.

‘We made it somehow.

‘And now, after all this time, I have only one thing I want to tell you. One thing that represents years of our friendship, years of my effort.

‘Thank you.’

With this, the girl smiles, tears already on her cheeks. She bends down to kiss the boy’s forehead, touching his chin with her smooth fingers. The boy closes his eyes as the girl does so, feeling the warmth of her touch.

‘Let’s hope,’ she says, ‘that I never have to do that again.’

When she lets go of the boy, the boy opens his eyes. The girl is right in front of him now, the soft light still behind her. He grabs her fingers gently. She smiles at him, letting go slowly.

‘See you,’ she says.

‘Later,’ the boy says.

And she is gone into the light.

The sky is clear and blue, telling everyone that today is going to be a good day. The birds are singing as they always do. Everyone gets out of their houses, getting ready for the day’s activity. There is no trace of what happened last night; no sign to tell people that last night was less than peaceful. Everybody laughs, smiles, greets, and lives their lives as if it is just any other day. They might even think it is going to be a great day.

A boy with cuts all over his body and face walks to school with a backpack hanging on his back. He walks past the park where an ice cream stall is set up by a man who hums as he does so. He walks through a bridge where the railings seem to have been mildly damaged and the ground cracks a little. He walks past the corner where a boy and a girl used to agree to meet there everyday before school.

He doesn’t walk past a house that has lost one of its residents. He doesn’t walk past a plateau where a battle has occurred recently.

He looks around as he walks, unlike usual. He sees the trees, greeting him with such breeze. He sees the sun that shines on him with such warmth. He sees the birds that fly around, sharing love. He sees people who smiles with every word that is said. He doesn’t see a man in cashmere coat watching his every move. He doesn’t see a woman with thick, wavy hair and bruises all over her body. He doesn’t see a slightly short woman who is followed around by two men with huge abs.

He doesn’t see a brown-haired girl smiling up at him and calling his name.

As he steps into the school ground, he looks around. Everything seems normal. Nobody knows that yesterday was a rough day. Nobody knows someone died for the second time yesterday. Nobody knows but him.

He goes into his classroom. It is filled with people already. He quickly steals a glance at the desk near the window at the back. It is empty…and it will be for a while now. Unless a transferred student comes and fills it.

‘Hey, bud, did you watch soccer last night?’ a slightly-stubby guy asks as he places his arm around the boy’s shoulder.

The boy freezes. He has completely forgotten all about it. ‘Damn, no,’ he says. ‘I totally forgot.’

‘Your loss. It was awesome!’

The stubby boy starts talking about last night’s game, not noticing that his friend-the boy-has other things in his mind. The boy unloads his backpack and puts his belongings on his table. He looks up at the sky and smiles.

Well, at least I chose you over soccer for once, he says silently to the sky.

And the girl’s voice echoes through his mind. Thank you.

Okay then! That's the end of that story. Thank you so much for all those who follow this story all the way through. I know it mightn't be everyone's cup of tea, but thank you for hanging in there just to know the ending :D Special thanks to ulilulelo who always read this story and ask me for updates.

P.S: I am currently working on a new story that, I hope, will be less dark than this piece. Please do check it out if you have time!
