"Please, Draco. Don't do this."

Why didn't she understand? He didn't have any other options. He'd made his choices long ago, and now he was going to stick to them, whatever the consequences.

"I'm sorry, Hermione. But I have to do this."

She was biting her lips, aiming those brown eyes at him, and the desperation within them made him want to kick himself for doing this to her. But this was something he had to do - not just for the wizarding world, but also for her. She deserved this.

"You could die."

Did she think he didn't know that? But how many lives could he save? He was one of the most trusted Death Eaters in Voldemort's ranks and had been put in charge of so many crucial events that would put everything into motion. If he didn't go, Voldemort would know. But if he did, he could pretend - pretend until the very last moment when it would be too late.

Having him there could be the difference between winning and losing. Knowing that, how could he not go?

"Please, Draco. I'm begging you."

He felt a sudden flash of fury at her impossible request, and before he knew what he was doing, he was pulling her towards him, crushing his lips to hers roughly, almost violently. He heard her surprised gasp, and then she was kissing him back with the same intensity, the same desperation that made him wish things could have been different. Looping his left arm around her neck, he bought their bodies even closer, trying to memorize the texture of her skin.

Why did she have to make everything that much harder?

He knew the exact moment she gave in. It was in the way her body relaxed and drained itself of its previous tension, the way she laid her head on his shoulder. Draco sighed and released her.

Sometimes, he wished that Hermione wouldn't fight so hard, because with matters like this, he couldn't yield - no matter how much he wanted to - and she only ended up hurting herself in the process. But then again, Draco had always known that there was no other path with Hermione. It was the way she was, the way she tackled everything from her relationships to her Arithmancy homework with that fierce intensity and stubbornness that had allowed her to succeed where others had failed. And he wouldn't have her any other way.

She gave him a watery smile. "There's nothing I can say to change your mind?"

He shook his head. "I'm sorry, Hermione."

"You should have been a Gryffindor, Draco."

He let his lips twitch upwards into a smirk. "No need to be insulting, Granger."

With a strangled sob, she threw herself at him for one last hug before letting him go. "Don't you dare let yourself die, Draco Malfoy. Or I swear I'll bring you back to kill you myself."

He couldn't promise her anything, but as Draco stepped outside the gates of Hogwarts and prepared to Apparate to Riddle Manor, he knew that whatever happened, he would fight, not only for Hermione but also for himself. Because he had something for live for now.

Finis.
