[His gaze is saddened but, thankfully, it is hidden under his hood. He knows Sofia is safer at home but they had talked about escaping everything in their world and somehow surviving in this world, and even if it was ridiculous, the idea of setting up a new life with her anywhere sounded perfect. It was why he had proposed ( Read more... )

[ Helen frowns at the message. This city seems to be far from fair. It's just another reminder that at any moment, any of them can be taken away from one another. It's a fact that Helen absolutely hates. Again, she's stuck with only the words "I'm sorry", but they feel horribly inadequate. ]

Your fiancée as well? She must be an amazing woman. [ Still, the expression she has says she understands. ] Le mie condoglianze, Ezio.

[He nods to her, purses his lips, and for a moment he wonders just what it is that causes them to return home. If the Doctor does it by choice, she is cruel and unfair. If the machine simply works in random, Lady Luck must be the cruel one.]

Grazie, Helen. [He frowns, and wonders what else to say.] She is quite the scholar, si.

[ She shakes her head with a knowing look. Helen would be the first to say that Lady Fortuna is a cruel mistress. ]

I doubt being a scholar is what makes her an amazing woman, nor what made her catch your eye. After all, scholars and educated people seem to be in quite abundance here.

[He chuckles lightly and shakes his head a little bit.]

Si, but what caught my eye was entirely superficial to begin with. A pretty face and a beautiful body. In the end, I realised I have had plenty of both and it is her mind that appealed most of all. [He shrugs faintly.] She is a challenge and she puts me in my place. E stato rinfrescante.

Isn't that how it always starts? An appreciation of what looks the other has. [ Maybe not always, but it is certainly what catches most peoples attention at first. ] All of those factors are important to look for when you want to spend your life with someone.

Ah, so she tells you when bed time is as well.

Si, I suppose you are right. [He's definitely the type to notice physical appeal first and foremost, though he won't make too much of a point of it these days, if he can help it.]

Mm, amongst other things. She is very much in charge.

[ She smiles and nods. Though, his second comment makes her laugh a little. ]

Then you must trust her very much. Most people wouldn't want another to be so bossy around them when they are used to being in charge. [ Like herself. ]

[He chuckles lightly.]

I am used to very dominant women in my life. Mia madre, mia sorella, Sofia, e molti altri.

[ Helen simply shakes her head slightly. ]

Sometimes, that's just what you need.

Si, I suppose that's so. Women tend to handle things differently to men. That is why I do not exclude women from the Order. It would be foolish to shut out an entirely different way of thinking due to gender.

That is very revolutionary for your time. It's good to hear. [ Considering how often she was shunned out of things in the Victorian Era for being a woman. ] But, sometimes, a man just needs a woman to calm him down. To ground him.

That and my sister would kill me. [He chuckles lightly but nods once when she speaks again.] You're right. Women have a rationality that men do not. We're a hot-headed bunch who need to be told when to calm down.

You seem to have a rather healthy relationship with her. [ A joke. ] Some women are the same, believe me. I tend to need guidance as well.

It's better than it used to be, at least. She and I had a rather huge argument and I did tend to see her as just a bambina. [He smiles.] Then perhaps you need a good man.

Ah. You two sound like proper siblings then. [ Not that she knows personally. Helen is an only child. Then she gives a bit of a broken laugh. ] Maybe. If you ever find one, let me know, Signore.

I suppose so. She is all I have left, though Aliunde has seen fit to bring me my mother, though in my time she is dead. [He shakes his head faintly at her, but gives her a lightly smile.] I suppose until I do, you will have to settle for me, bella.
