DJ has been grounded for the last two weeks because of his grades slacking from B's to F's. He has had his TV taken away, and his X-box taken, even had to take his stereo from his room too. All because he won't complete his homework and turn it in. This frustrates me so much, but at the same time I know he's going through alot right now. So anyway ( Read more... )

yeah, he has, He is 14, and when he was about 7 they said he had ADD. He lacks in organization, general motivation, (unless it's a project he is interested in) and short term memory. He really excells at any type of hands-on, physical learning. I have another boy, my youngest,James, who is 10 and he has ADHD. The diffrence is night and day. James can't sit still for 5 minutes if he tried to.
I think the kids get it from me. I never was diagnosed with ADD, However I do have difficulty remembering when the kids are grounded and I forget alot of things (might be the blonde hair but I doubt it) I hate mundane things and can't get motivated to do them. I'm highly unorganized, and hate to clean. (although I do)
Jimmy helps me remember when they are grounded now, and helps me remember alot of the things I say to them (regarding punishment...whatever) and helps me stick to what I say and hopefully I can be more consistant. I think that has been a big part of the issue with my kids. I just never enforced anything. So hopefully Things will better with time.

there's a lot of great resources on how to help kids with ADD w/school work. I literally had to relearn how to take tests, study& do homework.
Talk to his school councilor& see if there's any local groups or tutors that specialize in ADD learning. I went from barely scraping by to A+ by the following year. ^_^

what did you change? How did you change the way you learned? How did you find the help you needed? He has been to see his counselor, even had a meeting with the principal and his teacher that he was having the most difficulty with. That was last year.

most people will look at a mult choice test& try to find the right answers...trick with ADD is figuring out the WRONG answers. :) (just an example)
Seeing the counselor& the parent asking about local recourses is different though. Most school people will treat it as a "troubled kid" problem unless otherwise probed. I didn't actually get diagnosed until I was 17, which was by a Dr. We specifically brought the paperwork to the school, then they kinda went "oh year, there's a TON of help here for you"

well I think I'm going to persue this in addition to trying to fix some issues here at home. I have Monday off work, I'm taking your advice and talking to them. See what they have available. Thanks so much Jenna. Also, any other ideas you have would be GREATLY appreciated!
