“Well, I heard she was an assassin,” Five told Eight with relish. “Hired by the Prince to kill the Queen. That’s what I heard.”
“It just doesn’t make sense otherwise,” Eight agreed, nodding firmly. “How else could she be so secret? No one had ever seen or heard of her before she dropped in-“
“Two was there when she took over the Casino, weren’t you, Two?” Five asked, swiveling on her makeup stool to face Two directly with wide, expectant eyes. “You were working that day, I know you were!”
Two sighed and fidgeted with the strap of her spangled dancer’s outfit - she’d been hoping that Five hadn’t noticed her eavesdropping, but she should have known that was futile. Five noticed everything. “Yes,” she admitted, pretending to be very busy angling her feathered headpiece just right. “I was there.”
Five clapped her hands eagerly. “Oooh, I knew it!” she squealed. “Tell us-what was she like?”
Two paused. What was she like? Scary, she could have said. Brave might have worked too. Or stupid. And then there were her physical attributes -- short, or blue eyes, or holding a gun were also good descriptions of how Two remembered her, bursting onto the stage and yelling like a woman possessed, doing the impossible.
Impossible. Yeah, that seemed like a good description. There was something about her that Two had never seen before… she was so small, but something about her was so… powerful. Not in the way the Queen had been powerful… something else entirely…
Two stood up abruptly and tugged on her shoulder strap one last time. She knew exactly what that girl had been: “Lucky,” she told Five shortly, turning on her heel and walking out of the dressing room. “Very, very lucky.”
