Hsin Yeow's thoughts: 你最珍贵 (You're The Most Precious One)
We often get feedback along these lines, "Thanks for your performance! But we didn't get to hear all the songs because we were running around/taking photographs/talking to people/tearing our hair out..."
Unfortunately, it's true: couples are often too busy entertaining their family members and guests (as they rightly should) to sit down and enjoy all the songs that we perform. That's why we usually encourage couples to select a few songs that the majority of the guests would recognise.
Berndy and Steve were smart --- they came to listen to us perform at One Rochester before their wedding.
Performing at Berndy and Steve's wedding was a test of our ability to read the guests' minds. We realised, very early on, that they preferred listening to Mandarin pop. In fact, some applauded immediately after I announced that I would be singing Jacky Cheung's 在你身边 (By Your Side)!
Bevlyn then made a snap decision to sing more Mandarin numbers. Since Berndy and Steve had earlier given us carte blanche in selecting the songs for the evening, we ditched half our repertoire, and replaced them with familiar favourites like 你最珍贵 (You're The Most Precious One), 追 (Chase) and 爱很简单 (Love Is Very Simple).
The effect was immediate and satisfying. We noticed more people turning their heads to watch and listen to us, which meant that we were able to reach out to them with our music. That's what we aim to do with every performance.
Congratulations, Berndy and Steve! Thanks for engaging us (special thanks to jesmineang as well for recommending us), and may both of you have a blessed marriage, one that is filled with romance and joy!
