Hsin Yeow's thoughts: Liang Shan Bo & Juliet

Fion loves her husband Eric to bits.

Near the end of our performance, Eric came up to me, and asked me to announce that Fion would be singing a song for him.

I looked incredulously at Eric, whose face was obviously flushed with alcohol, and asked, "Are you crazy? Do you intend to sleep on the couch on your wedding night?"

Eric waved aside my worries, and nodded, "Go ahead! Call her!"

So I did. And Fion, who had no idea what hit her, came up to the microphone and sang a duet with me. The song was 梁山伯与茱丽叶 (Liang Shan Bo & Juliet), which requires the female singer to reach some high notes. Fion rose to the occasion, and sang beautifully.

After our duet ended, with thunderous applause for Fion of course, I asked Fion, "So how about getting Eric to sing a song for you?"

I thought for sure that Fion would demand the same from her husband, but all Fion did was to blink hard, smile sweetly, and say, "No need lah. He'd be nervous."

Hence, my inevitable conclusion: Fion loves Eric to bits.

P.S. I have to record this for posterity. While we were doing our sound check, we heard strange voices in the ballroom that unsettled us. They seem to belong to two people who were testing the microphones too, saying, "Test, one two three!", then laughing in strident tones. The thing is: no one else was in the ballroom except us!

I felt my skin starting to crawl until the hotel technicians realised that our microphones picked up the signals from another ballroom on the first floor.

Songs To Recommend:

Some couples wouldn't dream of getting us to perform Hokkien songs, which sound best if sung in an angst-ridden tone. Still, we found two songs that could change your mind.

牵阮的手 (Hold My Hand)

This song moved me at first listen. It can be about the love between husband and wife, or between parents and their children.

家后 (Wife)

A beautiful song about a wife's enduring love for her husband. Yes, the first chorus talks about how she wishes he could pass on before her, so that he wouldn't be the one to grieve. The second chorus expresses the same emotions, but in a different way: how she wishes she could pass on before him, as she can't bear to see him cry over her.

If you don't mind the slightly morbid undertones, then it's actually a really touching song.
