Eleanor's thoughts: You Belong To Me

Having attended and performed at countless weddings, I know the routine like the back of my hand, even though I have never personally experienced it. Hence, it amazes me how many couples are able to come up with ways to make their celebrations special and unique.

Before making their grand entrance, Jim and Theresa decided to set a lighthearted tone for the evening; they screened a hilarious animation that told their love story. The cartoon came complete with thought bubbles revealing what each was really thinking at key moments such as their first meeting, first Valentine's Day and the proposal. And since it was Theresa's father who introduced the two to each other in the lobby of their student residence at the Queensland University of Technology, one got the sense that this was a love that was meant to be from the very beginning.

So it was only fitting that Jim and Theresa should scratch their 7-Year-Itch by finally tying the knot, before flying off to honeymoon in Australia, where their love was born.

Despite the fact that Jim had been feeling under the weather before the wedding, he pulled through admirably, bravely facing the morning challenges that set him and his xiong di (groomsmen) by Theresa's jie mei (bridesmaids), After proving his sincerity through song and dance and the handing over of an impressive wad of cash, Jim was rewarded with a kiss from his beautiful bride, Theresa. And though this was their first day as husband and wife, their intimacy and mutual understanding was impossible to miss from the moment they walked into ballroom. Effortlessly and efficiently, they worked together as a team to perform the traditional tasks of cutting the wedding cake and pouring the champagne, helping one another at every step of the way without even having to think about it. Jim would step back to arrange Theresa's skirts onstage, while Theresa brushed lint from Jim's jacket and handed him the knife to cut the cake.

The band, comprising myself, Matthiew and Boon Chye, felt very well-taken care of. Lunch was ordered for us from the hotel's cafe menu, and, as emcee, I was even given a pink rosebud buttonhole pin to match the rest of the wedding party. The crowd was reserved but very appreciative throughout our two sets. A few sang along, including one lady who seemed to know every number we did! The seniors, as expected, came to life when we sang classics like 一人一半 (One Half) and 月亮代表我的心 (The Moon Represents My Heart). We were glad to hear Jim and Theresa say that their friends and family really enjoyed our performance.

Thank you, Jim and Theresa, for allowing us to be part of your special day. May you enjoy a lifetime of happiness and fulfillment together.
