Jonathan's thoughts: Be Our Guest!

Shu Juan and Yu Cong’s wedding party was definitely a dinner and so much more! This lovely, energetic couple decided that for their wedding, things had to be different - and they surely were! Here’s how they went around doing it:

1) Their wedding was not held at a hotel or resort, but at a chalet! Well, not quite the normal chalet that you’d expect, but a humungous one at Aloha Changi. Specifically, Fairy Point Chalet 7.

2) They had absolutely no dress code for their party - you were free to turn up in whatever casual attire you want! In fact, the band was instructed to turn up in “casual, beach wear also can”. Of course we weren’t that daring!

3) For the yum seng toast, they had one representative from every table up onstage in addition to the usual friends and relatives for the toasting session. They then proceeded to give every single person who was toasting a bottle of wine cooler, so everyone could join into the cork-popping fun!

On a more candid note, I remember having to scramble to protect my keyboard during the toasting ceremony. There were more than 20 bottles being popped at the same time, I was terribly afraid of where everything would be spraying!

4) The bride’s second march-in dress was something inspired by Arabian Nights. Talk about exotic!

5) Before the buffet started, the groom had his uncles and aunts to parade out carrying silver trays for a “first dish presentation”.

6) The couple marched in to the Beauty And The Beast song Be Our Guest, played live by the band. You can’t beat that!

These are just some of the many things the couple spared no effort in putting in to make sure that their wedding would definitely be one to stand out from the rest! Food was catered by Tung Lok catering, so you can understand why I was so glad the band was also given the opportunity to partake in the glorious food!

Halfway through the wedding dinner, guests took out sparklers which they were all provided, lit them, and waved them in the air was Junxiong sang <<偷偷爱你>> (Secretly Loving You). It definitely made the band feel like as though they were performing in a concert setting!

The bride was also quite the spectacular performer herself. At the coaxing of all her guests, she gamely came onstage to sing the Mandarin classic, <<甜密密>> (Honey Sweet). She was then joined by her husband and mother-in-law, where they proceeded to do a little dance during the musical interlude. It was most heartwarming and touching.

Another highlight of the evening was when one of the relatives came up to dedicate the song <<我愿意>> (I'm Willing). However, as neither Junxiong nor Juliet had the lyrics with them, our hands were quite tied. No worries though, because in the end we got the one who dedicated the song to sing it herself! Well, she was joined by her god-daughter, who provided excellent vocal help too!

On top of all this, I had the privilege to work with an excellent band lineup this evening - Boon Chye the saxophone maestro and I were backed up by the power vocals of Junxiong and the haunting voice of Juliet. Despite the three of time working together for the first time, there were no kinks or hiccups during our performance.

Shu Juan & Yu Cong’s wedding affair was definitely a very good example of how your wedding should be, if you want it be fun and lively. My heartiest congratulations to the beautiful couple, and sincere thanks for letting A Little Dream add onto the merriment and jollity of your wonderful evening!
