I've never much cared for fireworks. Nothing against them, I accompany friends to displays and acquiesce in my more enthusiastic house-mate's home barrages, but not my cup of tea. However, yesterday evening, during a road journey to a party in Bristol, every built-up area we passed was having displays. Swindon, in particular, was lit up by multiple shows spread evenly across the skyline. I started enjoying myself; scanning the horizon, staying focused on a area in anticipation whilst it was still in sight, waiting to see if an obscured display would be made visible by the passing of an obstruction. Many of them were the same so I guess it was the anticipation as much as the variety that reawakened my sense of wonder at fireworks. It's with sadness I realize I've become a little jaded.
