It's that time of the year again! When the French Rugby players get
naked, oiled, extra close and extra hot for you. ~unf. Ah, France. Only in this do you triumph over everyone else. NFSW, but unspeakably hot.

This post by
maldoror_gw where she asks for the best fic DBZ fandom has to offer, I've gone on an old school fic romp of my own.
It's been great to see what fics hold up to time, and suck in the aura of 'Golden Age' fics which shine with that special quality of authors who have just discovered anime and manga. There's nothing quite like stumbling along a story that is epically long, with every paragraph time stamped with the sort of enthusiasm that comes from writing something no one else has written before. I've been reading the fics that set the cliches, and rediscovering the good reasons why they've become fanon cliches in the first place.
I've found some gems, that I have. Though probably old news by now.
Hajime and Tokio by Angrybee
Fandom: Rurouni Kenshin
Pairing: Saitou/Tokio, All other canon pairings.
Summary: The story of the life, and love, which grew between an unlikely couple. Follows Saitou and Tokio from the Genji era through and past the Rurouni Kenshin tale.
Why: People just don't seem to bother writing out the canon-compliant epics anymore, you know, the fics that seek to snuffle and fix the gaps. That takes one idea and extrapolates a universe. They've created a Tokio, who was only talked about in the canon and made an entire history for the couple. I gaped in amazement at the skill that manages to pace a story so nicely, from before the series started, all the way to after it is completed. If you want to know how Saitou could marry a woman, or how a woman could stand Saitou without warping canon, this fic is the answer. The story is intense, the research and imagination which has gone into making Tokio ring true is almost absurd when you think of it.
Her Tokio is a breath of fresh air from the things I've been reading. Tokio isn't the typical heroine. She isn't a Elizabeth Bennett heroine that needs to prove herself equal to a man at every opportunity, or a helpless Harlequinn novel heroine that becomes completely inept as soon as a man is in the picture. This Tokio manages to take all the virtues of being a Japanese wife, who is loyal, obedient, caring and sensitive and turn that into something quietly and resoundedly heroic, something admirable instead of something to rail against. Saitou here is dead on perfect. Their relationship isn't mushy, though there certainly is love. The balance of respect and traditional values between them makes it easy for me to just BELIEVE that this is canon. This fic was addictive and I highly recommend reading it if you haven't already.
More of OLD SCHOOL RECS as I troll about procrastinating my machine of Doom.
