SOME PROPER RECS:
DC:
Title:
The Pleasures of Civic Duty by
glossingFandom: DCU: Golden Age.
Pairing: Bruce/Dick, Batman/Robin
Summary: "Just a boy good at heart, more brave than a man -- too brave to *become* a man."
Rating: Hard R
Why: Wow. Just. Wow. This is Golden Age DC fandom fic, as in back in the days where Superheros fought for justice, including against communists, gays, and the American way, no matter how bigoted. Think of old school Batman when he was still wearing colours, think of Batman the TV show, when two men could share a bed and it wouldn't be the least bit gay because same sex relations were socially repressed to the extent it didn't exist. Except of course, it did. Thisis perfectly set, at once innocent and in character and from a retrospective point of view, heart breakingly small minded in its intergerenational views. Dick is cute and hopelessly naive, but his character makes it easy to read in between the lines, and through his eyes create a Batman that for all his wholesome goodness is still the fucked up individual we've come to know and a police force representing a society that is achingly closeted and oppressive. An odd piece because of how well it's set. But terribly good because it effortlessly manages to capture the painfully cheerful spirit and ideologies of the time without feeling biased. It's honest and that's what makes it so disturbing.
NARUTO:
Title:
Missing by the person that always manages to *break me* with how superb her writing is,
maldoror_gwRating: PG-13
Pairing: Gaara/Lee
Tantalising Quote: "I'm so sorry, man. I...I just wish I'd been there, that I could have brought him back. I..." Naruto gives Gaara's siblings a look that's almost pleading.
Kankuro clears his throat. "He went down fighting, in the line of duty." He says it like a mantra; a Shinobi prayer.
"I'm sorry." Temari's face is a stern mask; she looks older than her twenty years of age. "Do you..." Her voice trails off for a minute, then she asks with undertones of concern, "Are you alright?"
Why: A simply POWERFUL read, wonderfully self contained but also incredibly moving. Anything I say in a rec will not do it justice, really. News of Lee's death reaches Suna. Gaara of course cannot accept this until he's seen the body. I love how he's completely numb throughout this because so was I. Mal takes you through such dark emotionally bleack places inside yourself where hope and certainty try to crush each other as the plot winds and twists. Thrilling and brilliantly in character for everyone in this fic. And an ending that makes the world a tiny bit better. I love this more than humanely possible, really.

What To Do When You Can't Win An Argument.
Why: Do I think it's helpful of all things? THIS. Is how you win the internet, almost literally. Msscribe showed us how. Now we can all watch and learn. *snort* I'm surprised how common these tactics are, in fandom, in every day conversation, and most dastardly of all, in the news. I can imagine the Bush administration and John Howard taking notes.
Trolling for crossovers because I love them, I do:
SG-1/Firefly:
Along Came A Spider RepliCarter has come upon a whole new 'verse.
THIS picture of Vin Diesel holding the MacLeod sword from Highlander. No words... except, Vin Diesel is so brilliant, there is no competition between the shine of the sword and his baldbald head. It also inspired this fic:
Swordwork by
helens78 wherein there is AU RPS between Vin Diesel and Adrian Paul (aka, Duncan). Oh, you BET this sends me into fits of giggles. Teh crack.
AND OP for which you should just read all the entries in
onepieceyaoi100's TIME challenge because they are all awesome.
But also:
ptps Luffy/Usopp One Sentence Challenge.
Rating: PG-15 overall
Pairing: Luffy x Usopp ...possibly my new OTP.
Spoilers: For Water 7
Why: Because this is sweet, and one of the most overlooked but absolutely CENTRAL relationships in One Piece. Zoro and Sanji may have all the action and snark but Luffy and Usopp form the backbone of the Straw Hats. Just look what happened in Water 7. Yes. But this was sweet, loving, cute, crackish and absolutely heart wrenching in all the way I expect out of these two. They are the best of friends, but this opens them to the worse kind of fights too. I like how uncomplicated they are as people, but the sheer range of their emotional capacity shown by this 50-set shows how complicated their relationship really is. It is awesome.
