Ever see an alice with a blossom like that?

The deck is all ready for the summer, just in time for this afternoon's thunderstorms (many thanks to my friend Jen for making me get off the couch). I planted flower boxes yesterday with a mix of red and blue/purple petunias, yellow snapdragons, and "pacifica red polka dot" vincas (aka periwinkles).* While searching for pictures (which I'll attempt to post below), I found this quote by horitculturist Ward Upham: "You almost have to work at it to get either plant [vincas and petunias] to fail." This quote normally would instill confidence in a would-be gardener, but I've killed spider plants before, so we shall see how this attempt goes.

* This all sounds impressive, but I had to dig the containers out of the trash and then google to figure out some names (who the hell knows what "vinca" is anyway?).
