Resolution follow-up

My resolution to be positive in 2009 has not been going as positively as I'd hoped. But it's mainly because I got distracted from the goal by possible major developments in my life. Things are very up in the air for my family right now, so I've been busy thinking about our future instead of my present goals. But I did get a colorful journal to follow my progress in, and it has helped. (Cool notebooks, paper, & office supplies rarely fail to help! :-) ) I haven't stopped thinking purple, either, and submitted the first chapter of my novel to the Firebrand Literary Query Holiday thingy (along with 3700+ other people!!), which makes 2 agencies that have it now.

I picked stars as a symbol to help me remember to focus on the positive this year, because stars generally have positive connotations ("superstar," "four-star review," "you get a gold star," etc.), and of course they represent light and looking on the bright side. Though to make it clear how much I really need the reminder to focus on the positive, note that I almost rejected stars because they seemed too cutesy, like something that would decorate a 12-year-old's notebook along with unicorns and hearts, and also because stars are big, burning balls of gas that could incinerate me instantly. Then I told myself that if my mind went right to cynical thoughts of being reduced to ash, I definitely could use a symbolic reminder to think positive! I found a bookmark with a big (some might say garish) purple plastic star on it that reminded me of my novel, so I decided to stick with stars (literally--I put star stickers in places like my wallet, steering wheel, and computer as a reminder).
