By working at IKEA I can signup to go on "buildups". That's when we open a new store somewhere and the rooms need to be implemented, the products all assembled and displayed, and they need people to do it. I'd already said no to the buildup options for this spring and summer, since a) they would screw up my schedule of classes, b) it would interfere with my being a part of redesigning the out-of-date rooms to represent the new catalog in our store, and c) I've enjoyed being in the same place now that I've done so for almost 2 years.
Then yesterday at our department meeting one of the specialists mentioned an email they'd just received about an existing store remodel in OSLO! It would be right in the middle of two vacations/weddings that Spouse and I had planned to attend (one in the Florida Keys and one in Arizona). It would be anywhere from 4 to 7 weeks (a rumour about international buildups requiring a longer stay to get the most for the travel expenses). I thought about it for 8 hours. By 8pm last night I knew I had to apply.
So, today I emailed the project head, copied my boss and my boss's boss. Now I just sit and wait to learn my fate. I don't have as much experience as some, I haven't been an interior designer on a buildup yet, and don't know any inside contacts on the project, but hey, you never know...
...I might be going to Oslo, Norway in April
