English Classroom

"What are now called 'Departments of English' will be renamed departments of 'Cultural Studies' where Batman comics, Mormon theme parks, television, movies, and rock will replace Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Wordsworth, and Wallace Stevens." -Harold Bloom, Elegaic Conclusion

Bloom is talking about the current state of English Literature pedagogy and what will soon happen if we don't clean up our act and admit that Shakespeare is God.

What do you think?  Should Frank Miller comics be taught in the same classrooms as Paradise Lost?  The Divine Comedy?

(Side thought:  who would be interested in taking a course juxtaposing The Divine Comedy and The Killing Joke?)

Should we curb contemporary society's impetus to turn classroom educations into pop culture discussions?

And what the hell does he mean by Mormon theme parks anyway?

Discuss.
