Apparently, just down the hall in the other wing of the floor I live on, a guy was assaulted by a former(?) girlfriend / female friend, late last night / early this morning. I didn't see the police tape on my way out since I'd overslept and was in a tearing hurry, but I heard about it quite soon because there was a good bit of email traffic to the Next House mailing list.
I didn't really care that much about it, until just now, when I found out (a) it's someone I know, like, and admire, and (b) the `assault' involved being stabbed several times. Luckily, he's been in stable condition in hospital for a while.
There only seems to be
one news article out about it yet, but apparently even this article has got inaccuracies, and just wait till tomorrow. I'm glad I was in the loop this time, instead of getting all the story several days after the fact.
Crap, MIT just can't get any good press lately, can it? First the sodium drop burning five people and a boat, then Star Simpson, now this. Although I'm reluctant to group this with the other two since the other two are instances of people being retarded and irresponsible and the public not knowing how to respond. Early morning stabbings are way different.
CLARIFICATION: The sodium drop in question was almost certainly not the East Campus sodium drop. The sodium was found upriver of the Mass. Ave. bridge, on the Boston side, near Back Bay where all the frats are. Some of them have sodium drops too, and (not to put too fine a point on it) it wouldn't surprise me if the frat drops are more accident-prone by virtue of less experience and less hackerly care.
Also, given the sudden change in my reaction when I found out who it was, I'm really kenning the
Monkeysphere idea, and thinking it has an awful lot more validity than most people would like to admit.
Please do not talk/gossip about this incident -- not all the facts have come to light yet and it's just not a good subject to surmise about. I will update y'all as I learn more.
UPDATE: Now there's a fair amount of news articles out and about, most with some errors. It is NOT KNOWN exactly how the assailant got into the building, and it is especially not known that the night desk worker gave her a key to the victim's room. Also, the fucking Boston Herald is performing more assholery -- they gave out the victim's name and that of his father, which they're not allowed to do.
Also, I keep hearing different things about the timing of the assault, and I'm suspicious of a lot of those things because I know the victim was out until at least 3am (we were both at a certain study session).
