I have a Philips radio-alarm-clock thingy on my desk. And a lot of the time when I'm sitting at my desk doing stuff on my laptop, it makes these little "popping" sounds. Mostly when I'm scrolling. When I scroll by hitting the arrow keys repeatedly, it pops once for every arrow key hit. When I scroll by holding an arrow key, it goes poppoppop when I start scrolling, then goes quiet. It pops at other times too, but not nearly so often or so predictably. It only pops at baseline level when I'm doing stuff with the arrow keys that isn't scrolling, or when I'm scrolling with two fingers on the touchpad.
I thought I was hallucinating/imagining this at first, but it's been quite a while, and I just did some systematic testing, and the correlation looks relatively robust.
So. What crazy random thing is going on here??? My first idea was that when I make a keystroke, it vibrates the table, then that shakes something in the clock and it pops. But if that were true, it'd pop whenever I type, and that doesn't happen. So what could be causing this? Spurious radio signals from the laptop getting picked up by the clock when they're within 2ft of each other??
wtf
