I'm in the process of packing up and shipping my entire life to Massachusetts. It's interesting. For one thing, now I actually have the impetus to go through all my junk drawers and throw stuff out. For another, it's nice to know that there's stuff I'll leave behind but won't throw out, so I don't have to live with it but feel guilty about keeping it. Yay.
I've got almost all my chainmailling stuff packed. The beads were the easy part; I've been keeping them in travel-safe containers ever since I started using them seriously. The rings are being more difficult. I have to go through all the nooks and crannies of my room, pick out all the tiny little scraps of maille that I never finished, and decide whether to take them apart. Oh, and, this has been interesting. I keep my rings in a chest-of-very-small-drawers, about a foot by eight inches by five inches. Originally I thought I could just ship the rings in the drawers. I was going to Saranwrap the whole thing so the drawers wouldn't slide out in transit. Unfortunately, when I turned the thing upside down, a bunch of rings spilled out. So there went that idea. I had to sort out a bunch of tiny rings from the floor, then take out all the rings from the drawers and put them in Ziploc bags. Maybe I should just get a damn travel-safe container and abandon the drawers already. This may be a sign from the Invisible Pink Unicorn.
Of course, it is kind of a hassle to put everything in boxes. It is also kind of a hassle to dig things out of the dusty corners of my room. I've been sneezing all day. And it is also kind of a hassle to make big long lists of everything I want to bring. And it is kind of sad to leave so much stuff behind. But also kind of happy, in a way.
I'm also doing a lot of shopping, for the excellent reason that I don't want to be worrying about twin extra-long sheets in the middle of Orientation, or while we're chilling in Cape Cod. It's very gratifying to go to places like Target and get a whole bunch of stuff for really cheap. Whee.
Also, I've recently discovered that Goodwill is actually quite cool. Almost nothing there is over ten dollars, and it's a great place to get the kind of random idiosyncratic clothes that are hard to find in mainstream stores. Sure, nothing's in the latest style, but who cares about that. There's quite a nice mix of boring and interesting stuff.
