I started working on this post a loooooong time ago -- back in February of this year, when dinosaurs roamed the earth. I wrote up about 4/5 of it, was called away, and forgot to ever return to it. Yeah, there's a lot of "science is soulless" out there. And it's true, in the sense that you have to subvert your ego to pick holes in your own methodology/conclusions, and invite others to do the same.

But the pursuit of knowledge, "scientific" or not, can be an overriding passion. To say nothing of the beauty of an equation, or a molecule, or a mechanism, or...

But I think I'm preaching to the converted here?

Well, the feeling you get when you see a really elegant construction is a lot like the feeling many people get when they see a really elegant/[insert other property here] equation, molecule, cell, what have you.
