Eth (/edh) and thorn are pretty common characters for th and dh. If you're using MS Word, it's not hard to set up hotkeys so you can type them as easily as any capital letter. However, it is true that the average person won't read it correctly...

Yeah...the first time I encountered thorn was when I was reading Beowulf (it had parallel text). I read it as /p/. *shame shame*

Same story here, actually. I think it was the Seamus Heaney (sp) translation, which was really good.
