Ending small talk conversations early

Mostly for my own reference, as I am trying to become better at conversations

Oh, I have had the awkwardest conversations there.

"You know, it is getting late."
"Parties are great!"
"...And, uh, you know, the T is closing soon."
"Nah, I can just take the bus."
"... And everyone else has left."
"Nope, [your SO/best friend/etc] is still here."
"..."

My housemate is better at skipping the foreplay with "THE PARTY IS OVER. PLEASE LEAVE."

LJ comments no longer are consistently visible for me, or I'd ask how one knows if a conversation is small-talk.

I'm not sure if I have a good definition. I suppose it might be something like "the conversation you have with someone you just randomly met on the bus, or someone you're just getting to know, while you're still feeling around for a topic that both of you find genuinely interesting."
