It's surprisingly easy to forget that MIT is much more a research place than a teaching place. I tend to get all caught up in all the classes I have to take with "Intro" in the title. To be fair, even those classes include a significant workload. But it's far too easy to lose sight of all the crazy awesome research going on here, as well ( Read more... )

A Niven quote from Ringworld, "He was not creative; he did not make things; he preferred to find them." Query: engineering = creativity; science = discovery? Are you finding your preferences in your wanderings? The (a) and (b) above sound suspiciously like the creative parts of you poking through.

Of course, one could argue that designing proper research to FIND things is also creative...

Ugh, why is it science versus engineering?? I think that both extreme viewpoints are a little misguided, and the best way forward involves massive amounts of collaboration and cross-pollination -- which, to people's credit, seems to be on the rise. But really, there's no sharp divide between discovering things and making things.
