Sunday Six Sentences

Each Sunday, post six sentences from a writing project -- published, submitted, in progress, for your cat -- whatever.

Then he holds out one of the apple halves with that easy smile, and she takes it without thinking.  She watches as he relaxes back onto his elbows and takes a large bite from his half and gazes out over the broad field.

Something sharp rises up inside her because he is overstepping his bounds, but she pushes it away and nibbles on the apple in her hands, letting the sweetness wash over her tongue.

“Then why don’t you borrow this book?” she offers quietly.  “And when you finish it, you can borrow another.  Mother doesn’t use our library, and no one will else will notice or care.”

“Thank you, my lady,” he says, looking at her so very seriously as if she has just told him he can take all the gold in her family’s coffers.  “You are very generous.”

He smiles again, and she returns it because it is warm, easy, comfortable.

“Regina,” she tells him quietly.  “Call me Regina.”
