So Rachel and I were watching a Baby Einstein video today and I noticed that the Spanish, English and French words for face are very different. The other body parts, for the most part, seem to follow some Latin association. But not face. Is this because your face is your identity and your identity is not determined by conquerors? Is the word for face taken from the native language? Is this a normal occurence? What words in language are most often from the original, native dialect? It would be an interesting study to take. When a people are conquered, what words do they retain? What mental concepts are too important to be supplanted?
