Erika has become interested in jokes. She finds her dad very funny, but he mostly does situational jokes or puns. He reads to her every night before bed, and she started asking him to read some jokes to her.
For the past week, she had been telling two jokes, over and over again. They are (in Erika's words):
1. Two muffins are in an oven and it is hot. One muffin says "it's really hot in here". The other muffin says: "WHOA! A TALKING MUFFIN!!
2. Knock Knock. (Who's there?)
Banana. (Banana who?)
Knock knock. (Who's there?)
Banana. (Banana who?)
Knock knock. (Who's there?)
Orange. (Orange who?)
Orange you glad I didn't say banana?
When she's done with her jokes, she laughs so hard and so loud, that she sets me into uncontrollable giggles too.
But the other day, when she started in on her two jokes again, Brian said to her: "jokes are only funny the first time, they aren't so funny again once you've heard them before."
She was confused by this, and said "I think they are still funny, even though I've heard them many times before!" So it took a little more explaining, to describe why the surprise element of a joke is what adds the fireworks to the story. She mulled this over, but still left the conversation with "I still think they are funny."
Today she said: "Mom, can I tell you a joke?"
I said yes, assuming it was her two usual jokes. But she said:
Two ice cream cones are in the freezer. One icecream cone says "it's really cold in here" and the other one says "WHOA! A talking icecream cone!"
I love my funny little 4-year old!!!
