Snow day

Jan 22, 2014 10:46

We had an early dismissal yesterday, sending students home by 11:00 a.m., though given that our students come from more than 20 towns and municipalities, spanning three counties in New Jersey, the last bus didn't arrive to pick them up until close to 12:30 p.m. The snow was coming down pretty hard by then.

School is closed today, and it looks like we have about 12-inches of snow on the ground.

There are several FB posts complaining about school closures, the number of snow days we've had (like school districts can control this??), and some even said "now we're going to have school in the summer!" or "we only got 3 inches on the ground, why do they listen to the weatherman, can't they do it the old fashion way and look outside the window first, and then call it?"

Which set me off on on a rant. Realistically, by the time they "look outside the window" and then make the call, students are probably on the school buses headed off already. And if the situation was reversed and they did they not call school off in a timely fashion, there'd be griping parents complaining about why there was a delay in making a decision, or if God forbid, a school bus crashed on a patch of ice, there'd be quite the outcry.

As the ex-director of Erika's daycare said: "Sometimes it's better to make the call early, then scramble to try and get the kids home safe once the roads are already bad."

school, rant
