Lazy summer days in Malaysia... part 3

Aug 06, 2012 15:32

I have no energy to write in Livejournal while I'm in Malaysia.

The sweltering heat leads to lazy afternoon naps, snuggled against Erika in an air-conditioned room. We play and swim and eat and sleep and wake and play and swim and eat some more. We dance and laugh and draw and eat. Then we sleep some more.

The food is delicious: savory, salty, fried, hot, spicy food.

The local language, a pidgin English of sorts, comes back easily to my tongue. The slangs, the words, the mispronounced intonations, the soft questioning rise at the end of sentences. Lah, go-stan, aeroplane, air-cond, where got, yes meh, and more lahs, all thrown in. A mix of Malay, English and Chinese dialects mingle in a haphazard multi-language conversation that is only understood in Malaysia by the locals.

But Erika misses home. She misses her father, and she misses her "brother" Kade. She misses the beach and her friends and her school and her Oma and all the other things that she calls home in New Jersey.

12 more days.
