My birthday was last Friday. Students were good but rambunctious-- I showed up and my classroom door was covered with balloons and handmade birthday cards made out of construction paper and markers. Quality of work was like they were in elementary school, but the though was A+. It really made me feel so appreciated.
We were doing Jeopardy! style review in preparation for the midterms the following week, but most of them were too distracted by the several balloons that were snuck into the classroom and were busy engaged in passing the balloons around the room, so I had to take them, which made them all moan. We got some reviewing done, in between unexpected renditions of "Happy Birthday" at completely random intervals throughout the period. One student would start humming, and another would break into song, and everybody would join in. It wasn't very good signing either-- we are a science/technology school after all, not performing arts. :P All still very endearing.
Then there was brownies (with icing!), cake (with icing!), cookies (with icing!), and muffins (with icing!). Then I sent them off to their next classes (*evil laugh*).
Brian got me two dozen long-stem red roses, a birthday card, and then we went out to have a casual dinner at a new Neo-American restuarant we hadn't tried before. We had mozzarella sticks and baked clams for appetizers, and crab cakes and veal marsala for dinner. Brian also bought a 8" cake with white icing and a yellow flower, with cute pink lettering that said "Happy birthday Clare". Then we lay on the couch and watched lots of TV. It was perfect.
This birthday marked the 9th birthday I've celebrated with Brian-- I can't believe we've known each other for that long, but I suppose we have.
