Ow, my day hurts.

I'm trying to do something journal-like at kareila's request, since we're now x thousand miles apart.

I woke up with a start at 7:45. The house was too quiet. I knew right away it was too late, but I got up and looked around anyway. They'd already packed up and left, without even waking me up to say goodbye. The futon was still flattened out with sheets and blankets on it. They'd forgotten to take the gruyere I bought for my mother, and in the sink I found a baby spoon with a plastic maple leaf on it. No way to get in touch with them now, and no point.

I thought about going back to bed, and that's how I bumped into Tracy's note on my doorjamb. "5:40am / Bye / thanks for everything / Love" and names. I wondered if there was really any more to say. I mentally wished them a safe trip, decided against sleep, and cleaned up the living room where they'd been.

Work was a good way to fill the day. I finished fixing a flaky RAID box and checked on Kareila's backup servers. I did a bunch of those other things I get paid for, like shuffling webpages around, explaining the difference between Reply and Reply To All until I'm blue in the face, and figuring out who really sent the sender-spoofing virus of the day.

I met with Debbie to give her some Perl advice, and dictated an interesting hack that worked on the first try. Turning a string into a here document and evalling it to do variable substitutions is a neat way to avoid a ton of s///g when you really need to substitute a bunch of things into a template. Not as ugly as requiring the template to be a printf format string, and fairly robust.

Judy came by fairly peeved that she was trying to demo a website and her graphs didn't work. I knew that it was because JRun had crashed on the webserver. But it took me all afternoon to figure out that JRun crashed whenever I logged out of the webserver. So I'd log in to restart it and log out again, and people would continue being pissed off. It's like the light in the fridge, I guess, if there were people working in the fridge who depended on the light. Yes, that's a weird analogy. I'm tired.

I got chased out by a fire alarm, probably the third one in a week, so I just went ahead and left for the day. After only 8.5 hours. I grabbed a todo list of stuff to work on at home, but I forgot Debbie's printout of her code. Oh well.

I sorted the snail mail when I got home and found a netflix envelope. Hmm. Rip. Princess Diaries. Hmm. I watched it straight thru, tried not to think about anything, and forgot to eat dinner. I fiddled around online for a few hours. Nothing done on my todo list for work, still hungry, and I hadn't written a journal entry either, so I went back to the office at 1:30am. I still haven't done much of anything productive tonight, but I might be able to sleep now.

family, work
